Michelle Spencer, Customer Support Manager of the local TSA office, came to speak to my Air Transportation class at Salt Lake Community College. These are a few of the items collected at the screening check points in one week at Salt Lake International. The black pistol is a working BB gun, the small silver/black and the grenade are lighters, and the orange .45 is a plastic practice weapon used in training classes, and those are live 30.06 cartridges. I guess it's possible to forget you have all these items in your carry-on... One take-away from Michelle's presentation is that if you show up at the screening point with a concealed weapon, even if you have a concealed carry permit, it's an automatic felony. This reportedly happens "a few times a week" at SLC International, and most of those people also claim they forgot they were packing heat. I don't think you can get a concealed carry permit if you have a felony conviction, so this would seem to be a self-limiting process.

Washington Square

Washington Square in Salt Lake City includes the recently renovated city-county building. As I was biking past I grabbed this quick shot. DMC-GF1, 20mm, 1/25 sec at f1.7, ISO 100. I will often shoot handheld at what are usually considered "too-slow" shutter speeds so that I can use noise-free ISO 100. With practice it's possible to get clean shots at 1/8 second with a 40mm (35 mm equivalent) or shorter lens, even without IS in the lens or camera.

Derelict House

This house is located near 200S and 700 East. It's actually a great old house, and it's sad to see these irreplaceable homes fall into disrepair and then get demolished to make way for yet another strip mall or commercial development. Check out the dentil molding and other details.

Cathedral of the Madeline Christmas eve binaural recording

You can just click to listen - no need to download first. This is a binaural recording so for best effect listen with stereo headset or earphones. This was recorded with the Livescribe pen using little microphones (included with each pen) in each of my ears. So it's just how it sounded if you had been standing there in my shoes. It's not CD quality by any stretch; the pen is intended to record voice notes, not music. But you may be surprised how good it sounds.

The Madeline Choir School is pretty phenomenal and this performance features them, as well as the pipe organ. The Cathedral of the Madeline in Salt Lake City is a beautifully restored historical building and the sound inside is pretty wonderful.

Airborne Swimmers

Here's what a swimmers start from raised blocks really looks like... There are 125 milliseconds between these images. So estimating that they are moving about 2-3 feet in that time, that equates to 16-24 feet per second or about 10-16 mph. All these swimmers started within a few msec of each other too.

It's been my privilege to know Kate MacLeod for a long time. She's an amazingly talented instrumentalist and has a sparkling, effortless voice that I always love hearing. Here she's performing at a small Quaker benefit concert in March 2007. Those of us in the Salt Lake valley are fortunate to be able to hear her several times a year, usually in intimate settings with good acoustics.

My Funky Elbow

In a freak accident I ruptured the distal biceps tendon in my right arm. Translation: the tendon attaching my biceps to the bone near my elbow was torn off, so it had nothing to pull against any more. Here's the surgical repair. The raised area on the radius is the 'radial tuberosity' where my surgeon (Ed Weeks, in Salt Lake City) ground off the remains of the tendon there, drilled a hole in the bone (it's the lighter area above the button) and used a metal 'button' with sutures to retain the (trimmed up) end of the severed tendon. It's held in position over the tuberosity where it 'knows' it should re-attach. The tendon actually grows back onto the bone, which seems pretty amazing to me. This takes a long time - 2 months in a rigid brace, and 5-6 months until it is fully healed. X-rays don't show the muscle, tendon or sutures. Apparently even MRIs and ultrasound don't do a good job of imaging either, so you can't really know how well it's healing. In the meantime I can't do anything which might tense up the right biceps and rip out the repair - no biking, swimming, backpacking, paddling, or handholding my DLSR...

Viola da Gamba

According to Wikipedia, viola da gamba is the Italian name for the viol, and means "viol of the leg," which also helped differentiate it from the visually similar but only distantly related early violin family which the Italians called viola da braccio (lit. "viol of the arm").

This particular viola da gamba has seven strings, for some fantastic bass, and is owned and played by Ronnee Fullerton of the Baroque Trio.

WWII Monument at Night

The new (2004) WWII Monument in DC is really striking, even more so at night. My father served in the Army, in the Corps of Engineers in occupied France and Germany. Many of the DC monuments bring to mind the terrible cost of war. I wish there was some way we could invest all the effort we spend killing each other into something more productive...

So there we were, a Frenchman who's living and working in Japan, an Italian living in Germany, and three US citizens of varying heritage, looking for an Ethiopian restaurant. On the way we walked through the Mall on a beautiful, warm, calm night. What brought us all together? A shared interest in robotics. But that's another story.

Chef Ken, and Smashed Potatoes for 180

Chef Ken, a former professional chef, came out of retirement to oversee the making of a turkey dinner for 180 at the Salt Lake City First Baptist Church. I volunteered to be the Smashed Potato Guy. Turns out that 60 lbs of potatoes is too much for 180 people, 40 would have been fine (that's 4 oz per person on average). So now you know the Magic Number.

We're starting off on a canoe trip and our four-year old son remarks "canoes are pretty tiltive". I love that word, and it's what stuck in my head as the name for this blog. So now you know.

Inspired by some other incredibly wonderful photo blogs (like Kathleen Connaly's), I've decided to take a stab at one. Maybe it will induce me to publish some work on a regular basis. As my good friend Russ says, "practice makes better". This blogspot site makes it easy, and I like easy, at least when the Important Thing is the destination, not the journey.

This image was taken on a day when I had no specific plans to shoot at all. It was a local Day of the Dead children's art project Saturday at Sprague Library. Everything seemed surreal anyway, and the Lensbaby 2 seemed the perfect fit.
